Happy November

VFPV Holiday grand floridian entranceblog

It’s November and that means Christmas will be coming to the Grand Floridian in a few weeks!  For months now the Grand Floridian bakers have been secretly assembling gingerbread houses, baking shingles, and decorating assorted cookies and treats in preparation for the fabulous display in the hotel lobby.  The amazing “life size” gingerbread house goes up mid November before Thanksgiving and opens on a Monday morning at 10 am.  I’m guessing November 19 this year but I’ll update when I know for certain.   The gingerbread shop sells a festive assortment of cookies, chocolates, stollen, and other holiday goodies.  The little shop stays open through the season until they’ve sold out of all their treats.  Sometimes  it’s not much past Christmas, but the gingerbread house itself will stay up until the first few days of January. The gingerbread house is really something to see….and smell.  The entire lobby is full of the cinnamony gingery scents of Christmas from mid November to January.  The Christmas trees, wreaths and poinsettias are added right after Thanksgiving. One year when returning to the hotel about 2 am Thanksgiving evening we watched workers planting the poinsettias – working into Friday morning, turning the Grand even grander with it’s beautiful Victorian holiday decorations and details.  The huge lobby Christmas tree also miraculously appears the Friday after  Thanksgiving. The holidays are a beautiful time to stay at the Grand Floridian.  We’ve spent several Thanksgivings and a Christmas there and made wonderful family memories at our happy place.  Even if you are not staying at the Grand, stop by to see the gorgeous decorations.  It will put you in a holiday mood. You’ll be inspired to go home and bake and decorate!  You can even pick up a copy of their gingerbread recipe and see a demonstration of how they put their little gingerbread houses together.

A Room With a View

grandfmap

, space Royal Palm club, spaceWith all the construction currently going on at the Grand Floridian, people are wondering where they can stay at the resort and not have a view of the mess, machines, and workers.  Disney takes requests for certain locations, however nothing requested is guaranteed.

If you have a garden view room category booked, Here are some views that may keep you from viewing large equipment and men in hard hats. Request Sago – either side of this building has garden view rooms – you may either face the marina  or a bit of the lagoon and the monorail.    Conch has some rooms facing the marina that are considered garden view.  Also some of the courtyard facing rooms in Conch may be far enough away from the pool that you’d be fine with that view. I would request “Conch, marina view”.   Any garden view rooms in Boca Chica or Big Pine will face the courtyard pool.  Normally a beautiful view, but right now a mess.

All of the deluxe garden view  (turret rooms) face the courtyard pool.  Usually I love these rooms because of their extra space with the little living room area in the turret.

Lagoon view & theme park view rooms are all a good bet.  You’ll be facing away from the centralized construction, with a serene view of Seven Seas Lagoon and/or the monorail and castle, and the other resorts on the monorail line.

Sugar Loaf… “Outer Lodge Club Level”… You have a 50/50 shot at a pretty view of the marina.  If you have requested one of the three turret rooms in Sugar Loaf, you may be watching the work on the pool progress during your stay.

Royal Palm Club – the club level in the main building…. Most of these rooms are “standard views”. The rooms either face the Beach Pool – and the Disney Vacation Club under construction beyond, or the courtyard pool – which is torn apart for a total redo.  The royal palm club theme park view rooms look out over the marina – however with the construction going on below these rooms in Gasparilla’s there may be excessive noise at some points during the day.

Remember, a request is only that…and often my requests seem to dissipate by the time I check in.  I’ve found from my experience it’s pretty much a waste of time requesting anything.  Or maybe I’m just unlucky, however I’ve always lucked out and got what I wanted at check in by asking for it.  So if you are assigned a room location that isn’t what you hoped for, it pays to ask what else is available.
